Summer in Margaret River is a time of blue skies, long, shoeless days, endless ocean swims, and unforgettable adventures. And the best part is that you don’t need deep pockets to experience its magic. Did you know some of the region’s most spectacular attractions are completely free?!
Beaches and Swimming Spots
The coastline here has no shortage for water lovers. Gnarabup Beach offers gentle waves perfect for younger kids, whilst Yallingup Lagoon provides sheltered swimming in crystal-clear waters.
For the adventurous, at Hamelin Bay, you can wade into the shallows, and you might find yourself sharing the water with friendly stingrays.
Bunker Bay and Eagle Bay showcase white sand and turquoise waters straight from a postcard, while The Aquarium offers Instagram-worthy moments.
Surf Breaks
Margaret River is legendary amongst surfers, and participating or just watching the action costs nothing. Surfers Point at Prevelly offers great views of experienced surfers tackling powerful breaks, whilst Smiths Beach and Yallingup provide more forgiving waves for those learning to surf. Pack a picnic, settle on the sand, and enjoy some free entertainment.
Hiking and Nature Trails
The Cape to Cape Track offers over 100 kilometres of coastal walking. Even a short section like Bob’s Hollow Boardwalk reveals breathtaking views of the ocean and wildflowers on display. The Margaret River itself offers peaceful riverside walks, while Boranup Forest enchants visitors with its towering karri trees that create a canopy overhead.
For a unique geological experience, explore Canal Rocks and Sugarloaf Rock. The dramatic rock formations here are free to visit and may even offer a bonus whale-watching sighting if you visit in early December.

Markets and Farm Gates
The Margaret River Farmers’ Market (Saturdays) is an affordable way to stock up on fresh, local produce whilst enjoying the vibrant community atmosphere. Many farm gates also offer free tastings of olive oils and honeys.
Lighthouses and Lookouts
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse requires just a gold coin donation for access to endless panoramic views where two oceans meet. The surrounding walking trails are completely free and offer excellent whale-spotting sections.
